It is offered As-Is, not covered by a warranty. - 1957 Dual-Ghia Convertible Chassis No. 134 Specs: 315 cubic inch Dodge D-500 hemispherical head V-8 engine rated at 250 horsepower, dual four-barrel carburetors, automatic transmission, independent front suspension with coil springs, live axle rear suspension with semi-elliptical leaf springs, four-wheel power-assisted drum brakes, wheelbase: 115.2" History: In one of the serendipities of the Fifties, Chrysler's concept cars, created by industrial designer Virgil Exner and executed by Ghia -- particularly the famed Thomas Special and the Dodge Firearrows -- found a sponsor in an American entrepreneur, Eugene Casaroll, who brought concept to reality in the Dual-Ghias. Famed as the automobile of choice of Hollywood's party crowd, particularly the bad boys of Frank Sinatra's "Rat Pack," the Dual-Ghia and its successors were much more than show-off cars. They embodied America's successful entrepreneurial class, in business and entertainment. In the Thirties Gene Casaroll recognized a weakness in the automobile business. Dealers sent salesmen to Detroit or railroad terminations to pick up new cars which they drove to the dealership to be sold. It was time-consuming and largely unproductive as well as subjecting the cars to unnecessary wear and tear before they were delivered to their first owners. Casaroll's first step was to hire professional drivers to deliver the cars, freeing up the dealers' staff to do their main job, selling cars. He then conceived the first tractor-trailer open car haulers, loading up five or six new cars and delivering them, shiny, new, and with minimal miles, to dealers' lots. Eventually Casaroll's company, Auto Shippers, built a fleet of over 100 transporters criss-crossing America with brand new cars for an increasing market. His expertise wasn't limited to facilitating transport of new cars. During the World War II, Casaroll developed a tank recovery vehicle using a dual engine concept to provide sufficient power to drag damaged armored vehicles out of the muck and mire of battle and return them to depots to be rebuilt or salvaged. Dual Motors prospered during the conflict but Casaroll's vision was not ended when the fighting stopped. Seeing the potential of the Thomas Special and its successors the Dodge Firearrows, Casaroll stepped up when Chrysler declined to bring the concepts to production. After acquiring the rights to the Firearrow design from Chrysler he entered into an agreement to buy bare Dodge chassis. Shipped to Ghia, they were bodied with refined versions of the Firearrow design, then returned to Dual Motors' factory in Michigan where the D-500 dual quad Hemi engines, Torqueflite automatic transmissions and running gear were installed to create the Dual-Ghia. Knowing these weren't ordinary automobiles, Casaroll made one more fateful decision: he personally approved every purchaser of a Dual-Ghia. He willfully rejected many substantial cash offers from purchasers he felt were unworthy of the Dual-Ghia's exclusivity, luxury, and design. It wasn't a rational business decision but in retrospect it has made the Dual-Ghia one of the most exclusive automobiles in history. Among automobile company patrons perhaps only Ettore Bugatti exerted comparable control over the purchasers of his creations. This Car: The 1957 Dual-Ghia's first owner is not known, but it is certain from Gene Casaroll's selection process that it was someone recognizable and important in the news and society of the late Fifties. It was acquired by the previous owner in 1982. He began its restoration only a few years later and it was completed in 2003, winning its class at the Louisville Concours d'Elegance in 2008. One of three Dual-Ghias in this owner's history, he stated unequivocally that it is the best, and runs and drives like new. Acquired from a Reno, Nevada owner who had it since 1977, it has a western history where it was run in a benign climate and conditions and has no known damage. Finished in red with PPG acrylic enamel, the glass, stainless and chrome trim all have been redone to Concours standards and the top made by a specialist with experience with several Dual-Ghias. It has the Dual-Ghia's standard power windows, power brakes, power steering, and TorqueFlite automatic transmission as well as a working period radio and fully functional gauges.
